She has been recognized with awards like the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist and received nominations for four Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist.

Befre Isis Was Ice Spice

Isis Naija Gaston was born on January 1, 2000, in the Bronx, New York City, and was raised in the Fordham Road neighborhood. She is the eldest of five siblings. Her father, Joseph Gaston, is African-American and was once an underground rapper, while her mother, Charina Almanzar, is Dominican and worked at a car dealership. Gaston spent much of her childhood with her grandparents and cousins, attended school in the Bronx, and graduated from Catholic Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers in 2018.

At the age of seven, she developed an interest in hip-hop, influenced by artists like Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj. Gaston wrote poetry and freestyle raps from elementary to high school. Inspired by her father’s rap background, she listened to Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and Wu-Tang Clan. Watching Nicki Minaj mesmerized her, shaping her aspirations. She adopted the stage name Ice Spice during her freshman year in high school.

Gaston enrolled at the State University of New York at Purchase, playing as a defensive specialist on the volleyball team and studying communications. However, around her sophomore year, she left SUNY Purchase due to the strenuous commute, working as a cashier at Wendy’s and The Gap.

Lil TJay and Ice Spice

In February 2023, Ice Spice teamed up with Lil Tjay for the tribute single “Gangsta Boo,” honoring the late rapper of the same name. This track marked her debut on the Billboard Hot 100, entering at No. 82. Shortly after, on February 3, 2023, she released the remix of PinkPantheress’s “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2,” featuring Ice Spice, along with its music video. Surpassing expectations, the song reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking a career high for both artists.

In April 2023, Ice Spice dropped the remix of “Princess Diana” with Nicki Minaj, which climbed to number four on the Hot 100, securing Ice Spice her second top-ten hit and marking Minaj’s twenty-second top-ten hit. On May 24, 2023, a remix of Taylor Swift’s “Karma,” featuring Ice Spice, was announced for release on May 26, 2023, as a bonus track on special editions of Swift’s tenth studio album, “Midnights” (2022). The accompanying music video, featuring Swift and Ice Spice, premiered on May 27.

Pitchfork hailed 2023 as Ice Spice’s breakout year, particularly with the success of “Karma,” which peaked at number two on the Hot 100, making her the artist with the most Hot 100 top-five singles in 2023. The deluxe edition of “Like..?” featuring five new tracks, hit shelves on July 21, 2023. On November 14, 2023, she hinted at her upcoming project titled “Y2K!” slated for 2024. As a precursor, she released the lead single “Think U the Shit (Fart)” in January 2024.

Ice Spice Twerking

Some people have asked this question: Why is Ice Spice twerking constantly? The simple answer is: It is trendy. It seems that part of the allure of modern female dancers is the dance component. Every generation of female rappers have incorporated dancing but the modern dance style is twerking. Ice Spice utilizes her twerking abilities to highlight some of the more risqué elements of her rap music.
