Interview with Bay Area artist Zachary Campos

What city are you from?

I’m straight out of San Jose, California.

How has your city influenced your sound?

Being from San Jose, I grew up surrounded by old-school rap and electro funk. My dad bought me a pair of turntables and showed me how to scratch when I was a kid. It’s one of my favorite music memories and one of the reasons I make the music I do. At every family party I would go to I would hear G-funk and I absolutely loved it. That music is ingrained deep within my soul. As an MC, that’s the place you have to tap into in order to rock the mic to the best of your capabilities.

Tell us about your best performance?

My best performance would have to be at my frequent spot Brix and Hops in Lodi, California that I did last month. I felt like I tapped into a different energy then I had tapped into before. The energy of the night was great and I was focused on giving a stellar show. I barely spoke a word and played music for 3 hours. It was awesome!

Talk about your latest project.

My latest project is titled Funky MC. It’s an alternative old school rap classic punk rock inspired mixtape consisting of old-school freestyles and punk ballads. I’m very proud of the work I’ve done on it and am excited for people to hear it!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

That’s a tough question to answer because I’m due to be a father come fall, so I’m not sure where life will take me. All I can really say is that in 5 years I want my kid to have the best life ever. Everything I do, I do for them.
