Mister Davey Jones Interview

Let it Breathe

“Let it Breathe” is a breath of fresh air. Luckily, Mister Davey Jones exists and is creating hip hop that is intriguing. Right now hip hop is need of someone like Mister Davey Jones. There are too many trap artists that all sound the same. Don’t get us wrong, we enjoy trap, but we also enjoy jazz infused hip hop. Jazz infused hip hop takes us back to the 80s and 90s. Back in the 80s and 90s, hip hop artists would infuse funk, jazz, and even rock into rap music. A Tribe Called Quest would always sample jazz and funk tracks which led to classic hip hop tracks. “Let it Breathe” is smooth and sexy. Mister Davey Jones takes us on a journey and makes us feel relaxed.

Mister Davey Jones

Mister Davey Jones is from South Carolina, but his sound reminds us of something you would hear in New Orleans. New Orleans has a lot of artists who blend jazz and hip hop. When you think of South Carolina jazz doesn’t really come to mind, but there actually is a jazz scene in South Carolina. Mister Davey Jones is in the forefront of this movement and will propel his sound to new heights. Hip Hop needs a breath of fresh air and Mister Davey Jones is here to deliver. We reached out to Mister Davey Jones for an interview.

Rock the Hip Hop Interview with Mister Davey Jones

Where are you from?

Charleston, South Carolina

How has your city influenced your sound?

Since I’ve live in Charleston all my life, all the events of my life happened here. We’re a tourist spot so there are always interesting people to meet. There is a decent live music scene as well. The jazz here has always been a source of inspiration.

What instruments do you play?

I come up with certain melodies and make vocal recordings of them. From there I give them to session musicians and put the parts together.

What’s your best performance?

My best performance so far has been local are bar. I went in with some new material people hadn’t heard before and got the kind of response music acts love. They were really receptive.

What is your worst performance?

My worst performance was at an open mic in Atlanta. I got to the second verse of a song and forgot the lyrics.

Tell us about your newest single.

The new single is all vibe. It’s a chilled relaxed groove meant to take the tension out of a tough day. I came up with the lyrics after a stressful day. I come up with a lot of material just cruising through cities at night.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years I see myself having built a well established brand as far as my music. I want to spread out into other things, so I’ll also probably be a serial entrepreneur by then.

Does your family support your musical journey?

I don’t share a lot as far as my music projects but when they find out I’m doing something they show large amounts of love.

Who do you want to collaborate with?

I’d love to collaborate with Robert Glasper or Cee Lo Green. Think that would be dope!

Any new projects you are working on that you want to share?

After the single that comes out on August 27 (Let It Breathe) I have a few more singles to release and then a larger 10 track project. I’m excited about that!
