Interview about Submission Shark
Where are you from?
I’m from Ontario, Canada.
How has the sport of BJJ influenced your sound?
BJJ has had a significant impact on my sound as an artist. Growing up, I was always drawn to martial arts and the physicality of BJJ intrigued me. As I delved deeper into the sport, I found that it not only challenged me physically but also mentally. This combination of physical technique and mental strategy greatly influenced my music.
Getting into the flow state during training and competition, where you are fully present in the moment, inspired me to create music that captures that same energy. The intensity and focus required in Brazilian jiu-jitsu translates into my music and the inspiring songs on this album.
Why did you decide to create BJJ music for this community?
After creating BJJ gear for this community and seeing the demand for it, I wanted to continue supporting BJJ culture in a new way. Music has always been intertwined with martial arts, from traditional forms having accompanying music to modern MMA walkout songs. I wanted to create an album specifically for the BJJ community that captures the essence of the sport and provides a soundtrack for their training and competition.
What’s your best moment as a music creator?
Writing has been the best moment for me as a music creator. The process of putting thoughts and emotions into words and then setting them to music is incredibly fulfilling. When I see my lyrics come to life through the talented musicians on this album, it’s truly a special moment.
How has the reception been from the martial arts community?
According to JitsMagazine, a popular BJJ publication, the reception for this album has been overwhelmingly positive. Many members of the BJJ community have expressed their excitement and gratitude for having a dedicated album for their sport. Some even mentioned that they listen to the album during their training sessions and it has helped them stay motivated and focused.
Tell us about your album ‘MASTERMIND’.
‘MASTERMIND’ showcases twenty-seven original tracks, weaving a rich tapestry of sound ranging from high-energy anthems to introspective ballads. Each piece captures the diverse journey of a BJJ practitioner. The journey to mastery, both on and off the mat, requires a strong mindset and this album aims to inspire and motivate listeners on their personal journey.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
As the founder of the Submission Shark brand and now music creator, I hope to continue creating content that resonates with the BJJ community. In five years, I see myself expanding the brand and potentially releasing more albums or collaborating with other artists in the BJJ and martial arts world. My ultimate goal is to use my passions for writing and music to inspire others and give back to the community that has given me so much. Overall, my focus will always be on connecting with people through meaningful content.
Does your family support your musical journey?
Yes, my family has been incredibly supportive of my musical journey. They have always encouraged me to pursue my passions and have been there every step of the way. They are proud of the music I have created for Submission Shark and are excited to see where this journey takes me. Their support means everything to me and has given me the confidence to continue pursuing my dreams.
Who do you want to collaborate with?
Travis Barker, Herman Li, Maynard James Keenan, Usher, and Demi Lovato are known for being BJJ practitioners themselves so I would be honored to collaborate with any of them. Their unique styles and experiences in both music and BJJ would bring a fresh perspective to the project.
I also have immense respect for artists like Nas, Tech N9ne, Paramore, and Linkin Park, so collaborating with them would be a dream come true. Ultimately, I am open to collaborations with any artist who shares my passion for BJJ and music. Together, we can create something truly special that resonates with the BJJ community.
Any new projects you are working on that you want to share?
I have two albums in the works. One is a more gritty hip-hop project that explores the struggles and triumphs of a BJJ practitioner’s journey. The other is a more reggae-infused album that delves into the spiritual and mental aspects of BJJ. They are both expected to be released within the next year and I can’t wait for everyone to hear them.
