Central Cee and Doja Cat

Central Cee released “Doja” as a single on July 21, 2022. The track was produced by LiTek and WhyJay and became popular on TikTok due to its lyrics, which reference American singer and rapper Doja Cat.

The song incorporates elements from American rapper Eve’s hit track “Let Me Blow Ya Mind,” featuring Gwen Stefani. “Doja” received widespread recognition, debuting at number two on the UK Singles Chart and reaching number one in New Zealand.

The accompanying video, directed by Cole Bennett of Lyrical Lemonade, marked Central Cee as the first UK artist to have a video directed by Bennett.

Reception to Doja by Central Cee

According to David Renshaw of The Fader, the track “Doja” has a feel that is “more tactical than exploitative,” which helps prevent it from becoming offensive.

Renshaw noted that the song touches on the “homoerotic undertones of gang culture,” but Central Cee doesn’t delve deeper into these observations.

Instead, Renshaw believes that the primary objective of the song was to get as much attention as possible.

Drill music picked it up again, but it’s up to us to keep it alive, or it could fade away just as quickly.”
